Frank Harcourt Appeal
To all Frank Harcourt Bilingual High School (FHBHS) ex students and Well-wishers in the United Kingdom, United States, Europe, Cameroon and the rest of the world, I extend very warm greetings and bring your attention to an appeal from the School.
Frank Harcourt Bilingual High School is appealing to all its ex-students at home and abroad, as well as to all Cameroonians in Diaspora for help in reconstructing the school after a recent destruction of 90% of the school’s infrastructure by tornados. This appeal goes also to any philanthropic organization or individual who may have either financial wealth or wealth in experience and information that can help FHBHS Kumba, Cameroon.
The 90% of infra structural damage has adversely affected operational capacity and caused massive disruptions in the delivery of educational services to students. Most of the school buildings including classrooms and dormitories have been destroyed.
Following this disaster, the current school administration with the help of some well-wishers were able to restore about 10% of the buildings which helped in keeping the school operational till the end of the summer term 2007.
The autumn term commences in September 2007. It is now a critical time for the school and the future is uncertain. The buildings have to be restored in order for the school to re-open for the autumn term.
The school is currently operated on a non-profit basis. The bulk of the school’s income is generated from minimal levels of school fees paid by students as well as philanthropic donations.
The school has a long-standing tradition of offering scholarships to underprivileged students in the locality. It has continued to provide high standards of education and discipline through out its history. The school prides itself on recruiting good teachers. The retention of these teachers would be a particularly difficult problem if no solutions were found to resolve the current crisis.
I am therefore appealing as a matter of urgency that you help in one of the following ways;
- To donate directly to the disaster fund. Please give whatever you can. No amount can be considered too small. A list of disaster fund Coordinators is given below below. All donations shall be profiled. I encourage you to give name when you make a donation, for the records. An account has been set up in the Standard Chartered Bank in Kumba managed by the national ex student secretary Mrs Genevieve Ndifor Bongam. Mrs Bongam has kindly volunteered to manage the reconstruction project. Should you wish to find out more about the project, she can be contacted on telephone number00237 7759342.
- Donations in kind are also very welcome. In particular, the school needs a good library and computing facilities. Any donation that goes towards these will be greatly useful for the students, and also be appreciated. For this donations in kind, please contact the school administration by liaising with Mr Eseme Micheal, on telephone number 00237 755334
- Voluntary Teachers are also welcome. Some companies and universities abroad offer sabbatical leave for their employees. If you need a rewarding experience during your sabbatical leave, then Frank Harcourt Bilingual High School may be the place for you.
- Any suggestions on how the school can improve general standards would also be highly appreciated.
